Things to ask about when
thinking about
marriage
Marriage is set as the top tier goal in life. You get to start a family, life with the person you like best. Seems pretty sweet. Although marriage is a big commitment, although of this day and age, divorce is more common*, and always an option.
There are many things to calculate when preparing for a married life, that's more than the wedding. Children, pets, living, money, medical, death even. These are some of the things we'll go over in depth.
- Children
Children in many religions is the main purpose of marriage. To some it's not something they want. You need to talk about this. Maybe you want a kid but he doesn't, maybe you aren't ready to have one as soon as you get married, maybe you want to travel before you have kids, how long do you want to wait to have them?
How will you raise them? Do want to use physical discipline, such as whoopins?
Discuss things your parents did that was not affective, and what was effective.
Can you have children? Would you be willing to adopt? Where would you adopt them from? Other countries, foster care, surget? Ask each other your individual thoughts on abortion, would that be an option is something happened?
How will you school your children? Private, public, or homeschool? Will you add religion into it?
Just like marriage, children are a big responsibility, their life is in your hands. What you do can affect their adult life. So it should be a very important discussion, as all of these of course. I would put this as a priority, with medical, and finances.
- Pets
Pets! Pets are wonderful, unless... you're allergic to them. Hence why you should talk about. Do you want a dog or a cat? Maybe something exotic. Or, no pets. This one is pretty easy I think, unless you are thinking of going big, like a farm, or becoming breeders.
I would say, get a dog from a shelter. Of course, talk about, same as children, how will you train your dog? What food will you feed him?
- Living
Where will y'all live? Will you stay in your current state, or town? An apartment, a house? Will you go overseas instead?
With that being said, we can transition into the financial aspect of all of this.
- Money/ Financial
How are you going to manage your money? What job do you want, or have, what job does your S/O want or have. Is this job beneficial to the type of life you wish to live? If you want a lavish life with the newest gadgets, but you're in college debt, and your S/O works at walmart, you're not going to, unless you hit the jackpot, but it's a far off dream and not something you should depend upon happening.
Talk about whether you're ok with being poor. What would you do if you went homeless? How important is money to both you? How will you manage your incomes, will you share the pool of money, savings, will you go into stocks? Bitcoin? Roth IRA's?
- Medical
Medical has many different aspects, and several things should be taken into account. What medical illnesses run in your families? What mental illnesses run in your families? What will you do if your child gets any of these illnesses. If you have mental illnesses, talk about them, if you haven't already. Hopefully you have though. Talk about both of your medical histories.
- Death
"Til death do us part" Death is something you should talk about in general. I believe some would want their spouse to continue without them, and find new love, and some would want them to not do that. That's something you need to talk about. Talk about how you want to be buried. Although a dark thought, it is necessary with anyone you know.
So, before you wed your lovely lad or lass, make sure you cover the bases when it comes to a married life. From bringing new life, to talking about the end of you own.
